Effective uses
Asking AI to explain a confusing concept in a different way, or at a simpler level, when a textbook explanation isn’t clicking. Generating practice questions to test your own understanding of material you’ve already studied. Getting feedback on a draft essay’s structure and clarity before you revise it yourself. Breaking down a large assignment into a manageable step-by-step plan.
Uses that undercut learning
Having AI write an assignment for you outright skips the actual point of the exercise, which is developing your own understanding and skills — and it’s often detectable by instructors and against most academic integrity policies. Relying on AI-generated answers without checking them against your course material can also mean absorbing errors specific to that AI response, since AI models can and do make mistakes on academic content.
A useful test
Before using AI on a specific task, ask: “Am I using this to understand the material better, or to avoid engaging with it?” Explaining a concept back in your own words after an AI walkthrough, or using AI-generated practice questions to actually test yourself, keeps the tool working in service of real learning rather than replacing it.

Academic integrity policies around AI use vary significantly between schools and even between individual courses. Always check the specific policy for an assignment before using AI on it — what’s acceptable for a study aid may not be acceptable for a graded submission.
